CityRead London Comics Workshop: Spirit of a Place @ Old Town Hall

Young people 13 – 19 years old are invited to join comics creator Karen Rubins for a workshop inspired by Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch – the CityRead London novel for 2015.

Look at the local places you know well in a new way, as you create your own genius loci (spirit of a place) character and write and draw your own comic strip about them.

Futureversity Manga is Back! AGAIN!!

If you are looking for something to do this half term and you are interested in manga, come along to Chipping Barnet Library, where I will be running a 3 day manga course where you will create your own characters and comic. In previous years we’ve published awesome anthologies of the students’ work – Cuddlychops, Mangas and Bash, Hendon Heroes… This course was a massive hit back in February, so if you missed it that time, come along in May half term.

Age range: 12 – 16

I’m excited to be returning to my former residence, the Victoria and Albert museum for another manga workshop for teenagers this March!

Explore the V&A’s newly revamped Japan Gallery to develop a character that will feature in your own manga page. Led by Karen Rubins, former V&A Artist in Residence.

Celebrate Japan’s Children’s Day with all kinds of activities for families.
There will be traditional storytelling and music, mini banner-making, origami, traditional puppets, and digital design activities as well as a manga drawing drop-in which I will be running.
All events are free and there is a full programme on the V&A website

I’m back at Watermans Art Centre in Hounslow for another Urban Ambush manga course!

Urban Ambush is a creative summer camp where children and young people aged 8-18 can take part in various creative activities. Manga, capoeira, theatre design, music and animation are all on the menu this year.

The manga course is for ages 13-18 and is suitable for all abilities.

From the Watermans website:

Channel your ideas and abilities into producing a manga, a Japanese comic, inspired by the local environment, working with professional Manga artist Karen Rubins. Design characters, develop an authentic style, and learn storytelling and artistic techniques with a renowned comic book creator, Karen Rubins, who has had work exhibited at the Embassy of Japan and V&A museum. End the week with a giant visual projection and your own printed anthology. Suitable for complete beginners and experienced mangaka!

Easter Daze: Comic Masterclass (Waltham Forest) @ Leyton Library

This masterclass is for ages 11 – 14 and is part of Waltham Forest’s Holiday Activity Programme

If you’re interested in comics or love drawing manga and you want to take your skills to the next level, this Comics Masterclass is for you. Join comics artists Karen Rubins and Tammy Taylor in a week long workshop, where you will create your own comic strip or manga story from beginning to end. Learn drawing, writing, and design skills, develop techniques and style, and try out professional comic-making materials. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty of soft drinks.

Classes are from 3 – 7 April, 10:00am – 3:30pm

The masterclass is free, all materials are provided, but please book online to ensure a place.

The workshops are inclusive of children with SEN and/or disabilities, however if your child does have additional needs please contact the organiser on 020 8496 3000 so they can ensure the provider can meet the needs of your child.
