As part of CityRead London I am running comics workshops for 8 – 12 year olds across London.

Join comics creator Karen Rubins to make your own comic strips set during the First World War. Put yourself in the shoes of a Londoner, and decide how you would react to the propaganda posters of the time.

Details of all the CityRead events happening in London can be found on the CityRead website.

These workshops are free but booking is required. Please check with the individual library for details.

Library Press – Comics Workshop @ Hounslow Library
Mar 12 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

This is one of a series of workshops I’m running with Library Press, an organisation that works with libraries, and supports people in creating and publishing their own books.

So you’re writing a comic? Now what? Self-publishing is the best way to get your work seen and get into the comics industry. In this workshop, learn how to plan your book or zine, prepare it for print, and assemble it yourself. We will make and print our own anthology with a copy for everyone to take home. Plus get some top tips about producing, pricing and selling your new product. This workshop is run by Karen Rubins, a writer and artist with years of experience in small-press, indie, and professional comics.

Urban Ambush is a creative summer camp where children and young people aged 8-18 can take part in various creative activities. Manga, capoeira, theatre design, music and animation are all on the menu this year.

The manga course is for ages 13-18 and is suitable for all abilities.

From the Watermans website:

Channel your ideas and abilities into producing a manga, a Japanese comic, inspired by the local environment, working with professional Manga artist Karen Rubins. Design characters, develop an authentic style, and learn storytelling and artistic techniques with a renowned comic book creator, Karen Rubins, who has had work exhibited at the Embassy of Japan and V&A museum. End the week with a giant visual projection and your own printed anthology. Suitable for complete beginners and experienced mangaka!
